According to the Mongol proverb “a Mongol man without a horse is like a bird without wings”. Mongolian nomadic culture is intensely linked to horses. The horse and a nomadic lifestyle of living enabled the Mongols led by Chinggis Khaan and his descendant to amass the largest empire to world has ever known. The Mongol horse is small, being about the height of a double pony like 1.3 meters at the shoulder. The horse is the most practical form of transportation in Mongolia. The pleasure is to be unconstrained by roads or traffic lights, free to go in any direction! Fermented mare’s milk airag is a refreshing drink, Mongolia’s drink of choice. This mild beverage made of fermented mare’s milk has a slightly acid taste and great for treating thirst.

Day 1. Ulaanbaatar

Our team will meet you at the international airport and transfer to the hotel in Ulaanbaatar.

Day 2. Gorkhi Terelj National Park

After breakfast, we will drive to the Gorkhi Terelj National Park. Terelj was founded as a park in 1994 and located on the edge of Khan Khentii mountain range. Terelj is the name of a plant (Latin ledum), very abundant in the area, which flowers at the end of the spring. Edelweiss is also very common here. The alpine scenery and fantastic rock of Terelj National Park formed the homelands of Chinggis Khan and his hordes. The rock formations of the park are fascinating and some of the rock resembles the long spiky bodies of prehistoric animals. We will transfer to the ger camp start our horse riding along the valley to the Tuul River. Today is a day to get to know your Mongolian horses and practice short distance-riding. Overnight in the ger camp.

Day 3. Aryapala Meditation Center

Afterbreakfast, we will start  horse riding day in the park. The riding distance will be 25-30km per day. On the way we will explore magnificent alpine landscape of Terelj. The most popular granite rock formation is called Turtle Rock-a gigantesque rock made and carved into a turtle by only wind and rain water, which is just off the main road into the park. Our next stop is Buddhist meditation centre called Aryabala temple just nestled in hills, there is a unique and wonderful view of the Terelj area from the top of the hill. We will horse ride around 25-30 km to the Khan Khentii mountain range passing beautiful Terelj River, lush green meadows and bushy steppes with willow. Terelj River is primarily a mid size stream with many rapid flows. We will overnight in the tent in the back country.

Day 4. Horse riding/Terelj

After breakfast, we will continue second day ride. We will horseback along the Terelj River to the remotest corner of the valley, the corner is called Ulyn bulan, a hidden place where is not many inhabitants. The distance of the ride will be approximately 25-35km. We will experience everyday life of local herdsmen to explore how they herd and milk their animals such as cattle, yak, sheep and horse and tasting airag-Mongolia’s refreshing drink of choice. We will horse ride back to our base camp and overnight in the camp.

Day 5. Horse riding/Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast at the camp, we will horse ride in the valley between the granite rocky mountain. Our route takes us through the wide, open meadows, steppes that Mongolia is most renowned for –past grazing herds of sheep, horses and nomadic gers. In the afternoon we will drive back to Ulaanbaatar and visit Gandan Monastery a centre of Mongolian yellow head Buddhism. We will experience the sense of Buddhism in Mongolia and see the outstanding and impressive 24m golden plated statue of Buddha; Megjid Janraiseg. This monastery is the largest and most important monastery of Mongolia with 500 monks. Overnight and relax in the hotel.
